Camera Calibration for Timber Colour Matching

Accurate colour matching of timber is assured by using camera calibration to ensure long-term consistency in colour measurements.

To provide accurate measurements for timber colour matching, the images are captured using a calibrated colour camera. Individual images are calibrated to accommodate changes in illumination levels over time.

To measure the illumination, calibration targets are included in the images. Laboratory standards are used to calibrate the system approximately weekly, while ceramic tiles within the camera's viewing area accommodate short-term changes. The timber sample itself is placed on a bright blue background, so that the image analysis system can easily separate the timber from the background.
